What the minister does in his spare time
Mosibudi Mangena, the science and technology minister, seldomly makes the news in his official capacity. It turns out that he he has other tricks up his sleeve. He has retained the leadership of the Azanian People's Organisation (Azapo).
Mangena was elected unopposed as party president at the Party's 18 biennial congress held in Hammanskraal this weekend. The congress was held under the theme: ‘building the people's alternative’, and was aimed at launching a revamped party to become a viable opposition to the ruling party. It was expected that new leaders would be chosen to lead a revamped Azapo. Despite this party's four top jobs were all elected unopposed.
Mosibudi Mangena, Azapo's president, says: “I have been the president for the past 11 yrs and I asked the organisation to elect someone else so I could pass on the baton, but they said no, and have requested me to carry the organisation forward to the next level.”
Mangena says the main resolution taken at the congress was to take an active part in the eradication of poverty, and to end the problem of landless people. He said the party also decided that lawyers were not the people to decide on moral issues like same-sex marriages. Link
